Archaeological, Ethnographic and Historical Basque (in Basque, Euskal Arkeologia, Etnografia eta Kondaira Museoa) Museum, also known more concisely Basque Museum of Bilbao or Euskal Museoa, is located in the Miguel de Unamuno of Bilbao plaza.
The Basque Museum, prays in his informative information, has as a guiding principle of its cultural action the preservation and dissemination of the objects that make up their collections and lifestyle testify that the Basque people have developed over time.
The Museum is located in a baroque building in the Casco Viejo of Bilbao and was established to locate a church and College of the Jesuits under the name of Colegio de San Andrés.
In 1921 and occupying the ground floor of the cloister it opens to the public the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum Vasco Vizcaya under the sponsorship of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and Bilbao City Council.
Gradually the museum will occupy the building annexes and increasing its collections, collections covering the archeology of Bizkaia and ethnohistory of the Basque Country.
At present the museum, known as Euskal Museoa / Basque Museum of Bilbao, is in a process of renewal both museum and museum level. Opening a new main entrance to the Plaza de Unamuno, an open space and easy viewing audience is certainly the starting point for this remodeling and the most striking for those who visit for its stark contrast to the architecture of the element historic building in which it is located.
The objectives pursued with these changes are to show the historical and cultural evolution of our society highlighting it, those characteristics that make it unique and singular.
Since 1962 is a Cultural (BIC) with the category of National Historical and Artistic Monument.
