Tanger and its Museum of the Kasbah

The Museum of the Kasbah in Tangier housed in an old public building in the city, Dar el-Makhzen or House of the Interior. This is the palace of the sultan, who was also the courts, prison and one of the most valuable buildings in the city. It was erected by the pasha Ahmed Ben Ali Rifi and home of the sultans Moulay Slimane, Moulay Hassan and Moulay Hafid. Today, its rooms house a large collection of crafts, weapons and jewelry.

The Museum of the Kasbah of Tangier began to be used as an exhibition hall in 1922. However, the former Dar el-Makhzen was built between 1691 and 1740, within the walls of the kasbah. It has a central courtyard surrounded by peristyle and marble columns with composite capitals. Other stays are cash and several rooms with carved wooden domes.

Today, the halls of the ancient palace of Sultan host a wide local and national deartesanía exposure. You can admire objects of historical periods, ranging from prehistory to the modern age. It is also possible to envisage arms of the eighteenth century and later, from different areas of Morocco. Typical Moroccan jewelery, carved wood, Moroccan writing samples and sculpted friezes complete the list of items displayed in the museum.

The Board of the Green Dome is one of the most charming Palace. It was the room where the sultan received visits and diplomatic representatives. The large glass dome (al-Qubba Lakbira) can be seen an inscription on zellij, on white background. Finally, elRiad or Andalusian garden has a central fountain, a well and old trees which have witnessed eight centuries of Moroccan history.
